Gary Coburn concluded the Journey to Pentecost series by examining Acts 2:14-41 and the powerful events surrounding the Day of Pentecost. The lesson focused on the arrival of the Holy Spirit, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, and the birth of the church. Peter, who had denied Jesus only weeks earlier, now stood boldly before the crowd and proclaimed that Jesus was both Lord and Messiah, demonstrating the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Peter showed how Joel’s prophecy and David’s writings pointed to Christ’s resurrection and exaltation. When the people were convicted and asked what they should do, Peter instructed them to repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. About 3,000 people responded and were baptized, marking the beginning of the church. The lesson also highlighted the characteristics of the early church as described in Acts 2:42: devotion to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Gary reminded the congregation that the church is not a building but the body of Christ, and that the same Holy Spirit who empowered the early disciples continues to transform and strengthen believers today.
